Moving to Australia was
not as easy as I thought. Don’t get me wrong it is a nice place but in the
corporate world, especially in the Accountancy realm, firms and companies could
be obsessed with “local experience” and “Australian qualification”.
When I moved to Guernsey
(Channel Islands) more than 6 years ago as an external auditor, not having
local experience and their recognised qualification was not an issue at all.
The important thing was that you have relevant accounting or auditing
experience and was qualified back home.
You can still get an
accounting or auditing job in Australia without those two but I guess there are
more challenges and disappointments, so just be ready. The best way to get
through them is to stay in a job to get that experience and study.
CA or CPA?
Based on my observations,
accounting/auditing firms tend to favour CA (Chartered Accountants Program of
the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia [ICAA]) for graduates starting
an accounting qualification, although they don’t really mind if you join them
already with a CPA qualification (Certified Practising Accountants
qualification of the CPAA).
With other entities or
companies, it doesn’t really matter which one you take or have already taken.
The CPA Program is cheaper
and apparently less stressful. The only advantage that I see on the CA Program,
and the reason that I chose it, is that it is recognised more internationally.
Steps for enrolling in the CA Program
The procedures I’m going
to share with you is based on my experience, having finished my Bachelors
Degree in Accounting and obtained my accounting qualification from my home
country, the Philippines.
The Assessment
Before you can even think
of enrolling in a module (there are 5 modules in total for the whole program)
you have to get assessed first. The assessment is to determine if your
accounting degree is equivalent to an Australian degree.
If you have applied for a
permanent resident visa in Australia previously and have used ICAA for you
accounting assessment for migration purposes, you cannot use the migration
assessment for entry into the Chartered Accountants Program as separate
criteria apply.
Download the Standard
Assessment Form from the ICAA website (www.charteredaccountants.com.au)
and fill it out. These are the documents I submitted together with the
accomplished assessment form:
- Original certified copy of the diploma and certificate of graduation from my university;
- Original certified copy of the academic transcript of records;
- Original certified copy of the course description with an explanation of what each subject is all about;
- Original letter of good standing (dated 3 month from application received date) from local accounting body;
- Original certified copy of my accounting (CPA) certificate;
- Original certified copy of my exam results;
- CV or resume; and
- Certified copy of work reference or letter from employer.
They got back to me after
almost 4 weeks and told me that I need to take the following subjects from an
approved Australian tertiary institution:
- Australian Corporation Law
- Australian Taxation Law
- Finance
The Registration
It took me a year to
finish the 3 subjects. At the end of the day all I needed is the official
transcript of records from the university.
Go to the ICAA website and
download the Employment Details Form. Ask one of your supervisors (that is
already a Chartered Accountant) to be your mentor. Fill out Sections 1 and 2 of
the form and ask your mentor to sign in Section 2.
Registration is done
online in the ICAA website. You would need to upload the accomplished
Employment Details Form, a copy of the assessment letter they sent you (this
letter lists the subjects that they want you to take) and a certified true copy
of the official transcript of records.
Enrolment
You will receive an email
from ICAA after a few weeks that you have been registered. Obtain their
timetable and schedules from their website, if you haven’t already, and look up
the dates of enrolment for the subject that you want to take. You can now enrol
on that subject starting on the date of enrolment specified.
The Journey Ahead
We’re back to being
students again, which is not altogether a bad thing.
I’m still in the process of
enrolment and will be taking up Audit & Assurance as my first module. I
will be sharing some of my notes here so watch out for them if you are in the
same journey. Enter you email address in the upper right side of this page, if
you want to get the notes emailed to you as they come.
Classes start really soon
so good luck to us!
Now be the best that you
can be,
Xiela Marie Dacyon
hi sheila, i will be on the same journey as you are and i have a few questions with you regarding the requirements for the assessment.
ReplyDelete1. Original letter of good standing (dated 3 month from application received date) from local accounting body; - local accounting body, meaning the Philippine CPA?
2. Certified copy of work reference or letter from employer. - does this relate to your Philippine employment or local employment in Australia?
3. By "original certified" do you mean, you submitted a notarized photocopy of your original documents, or was it your "original documents"
Grateful if you can respond! thank you!
Heart
heartydave@gmail.com
Hi Heart - my answers to your questions:
Delete1. Mine was from PICPA
2. Before coming to Australia, I worked in Guernsey... so it was a letter from my employer in Guernsey.
3. Original copy of the certified (notarised) document, so not the original documents.
Best of luck :)
Hi Shiela, thank you for sharing your experience. I am planning to move there as well and preparing myself professionally. May i know whether i can take CA even when I am not in Australia?thanks much
DeleteHi Tomas - the CA qualification is offered by CAANZ (formerly ICAA) in many countries other than Australia. Please check their website at http://www.charteredaccountants.com.au.

Very nice blog I must say as I was looking to find a chartered accountant Perth and discovered your article.
DeleteHi Xielamarie, thanks for taking time to make this blog..I am just so happy to find it. I'm still in the planning stage to apply for Australia - I'm also a CPA and a former external auditor (same as my wife), we are in our 35-37 years of age and has a 4 year old kid. Both of us are now in Commerce and industry as managers. Would like to ask if which part of Australia would you suggest is best for Accountants..thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteHello Altisoy - most of my accountant friends are either in Sydney or in Melbourne, and I'm in Perth. There are more job and business opportunities in the bigger cities of Australia, I suppose. But that's the nice thing about being an accountant - you can go anywhere you want!
DeleteIf you have more questions along the way you can message me in Facebook (at Accounting Can Take You Places). To get the latest articles on my blog, please submit your email address in the right hand box above.
Thanks and all the best,
Xiela
hi xiela your blog is really informative. but can i ask if non-CPA here in the Philippines can also apply as CA in Australia. your thought will be highly appreciated
ReplyDeleteHi Ren - you should be able to apply for the CA qualification even if you're not a CPA in the Philippines as long as you have finished your Accounting degree/course.
DeleteBecome your best self,
X
Hi Xiela, I have a follow up question.
DeleteDo you think it is possible to have or be acceptable in CA program when you are non-CPA here in Philippines?
Thank you.
Elaine
hi again ms xiela, i have additional question, where did you take the three subject you mentioned above?thanks again.
ReplyDeletehi for the 3rd time ms xiela, i understand that you are already in Australia and going through the process there, i would like to ask if i can also go to the process while i am here in the philippines?i already have my own family here and wanting to work there at Perth also but i intend to do it after i finish the accreditation process as chartered accountant here in the philippines.
ReplyDeleteHi Ren,
Delete1) Even if you are not a CPA in the Philippines you can apply to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in Australia. You have to pass their 5 exams and complete 3 years relevant experience though before you can become a full member.
2) I took the 3 subjects in a university here in Australia via online studies.
3) ICAA does not offer the CA exams in the Philippines. I believe you can study in the Philippines but you have to go the the nearest country where they hold the exams (e.g. Malaysia) to take the exams.
You can check out ICAA's website (www.charteredaccountants.com.au) for more information.
Thanks and all the best,
Xiela
Hi shiela. its really a good blog of yours. should i take CA program or CPAA even though my position to applied with is accounting assistant?
ReplyDeleteHi James - thanks for dropping by my blog. To answer your question - it really depends on what you want, want your plans are for the future and probably how much time you have to study. Based on my observation, those who work for accounting firms (and single, if I may add) tend to take the CA program while those in private companies usually opt for the CPA program of the CPAA.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Xiela
Hi Ms Xiela,
ReplyDeleteThank you for giving your time for this blog. This is very helpful for us. I've been thinking to try my in oz. I'm 25 yrs old been in external audit for 4 yrs and currently working as finance supervisor here in the Philippines. Do you think it is advisable for me to go NOW and try my luck in oz? Then i will take the CA program. Your response will be highly appreciated. Thank you so much!
April
Hello. I'm currently in my last semester in the BSA program in one of the universities in the Philippines. I've been contemplating whether to take the board exam. I already have a permanent resident visa in Australia and I plan to work there after I complete the board exam. However, I realized that I needed further studies and take the exam there to practice accounting in Australia. Hence, made me realize that taking the board exam here in the Philippines is not needed. Should I still take the board exam or not? Thank you in advance for your response!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for Filipino Accountants in Dubai?
ReplyDeletehi shiela, congratulations on your blog. It is great! you are helping people which is a good cause!
ReplyDeleteMay I ask – im a CPA in the Philippines.
I would like to know CPA Australia’s assessment on my qualification as I plan to work there in Australia (Melbourne).
If they say that I need to study some courses first, I will do so.
My question is about the fee. Below is a link from their website.
I’m confused if I will fall under “new membership/assessment fee”, with fee amounting to $145?
Or will I fall under “skilled migration assessment” (fee is $445)?
https://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/member-services/fees/all-other-locations
would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
Hi jj - if you're applying for an Australian permanent resident visa and need CPA Australia to assess your accounting course then you'll fall under 'skilled migration assessment'. However, if you want to become a CPA in Australia and enrol in their program (to be qualified) then you need to click 'new membership/assessment fee'. Having your accounting course/degree assessed by CPA Australia for visa/migration purposes does not automatically enrol you in their program. They're 2 separate things.
DeleteHope that helps,
Xiela
Hi Xiela,
ReplyDeleteThis blog is great. I am also an external auditor here in PH exploring opportunities to migrate to AU.
I was wondering from which institution you obtained your skills assessment for visa purposes. I understand that your ICAA assessment was for CA certification and was curious how you applied for an Australian visa (assuming you applied for skilled migration).
Hope to hear from you and thanks!
Hi NR - thanks for visiting my blog. I used CPAA for skills assessment when I was applying for a visa. I applied for an Australian visa (skilled independent) through the Australian immigration website back in 2005. The requirements and the steps are in their website so just followed everything there.
DeleteAll the best,
Xiela
Hi! I am a CPA here in the Philippines for about 2 years by November, and I have this plan of working in Australia. I took the IELTS last month, and I only got a competent remarks. As to your opinion, do I have to lodge my papers as early as now for it to be assessed by an accounting body in Australia? What organization? And what do you think is the probability that I'll get a positive result? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Marj - if you have a plan to work in Australia, in my opinion, work first on your visa rather than the CA/CPA qualification. You have a better chance of getting a job in Australia if you have a proper visa rather than a qualification.

Good day ma'am Xielamarie. Im having plans to study in Australia hoping to earn the CA title..I'm 23 years old with only one year working experience at a local auditing firm in the Philippines.. Do you think I can qualify to apply as a student in Oz? Are there any part-time job opportunities there while Im still studying? I really want to study and work in Australia to attain financial freedom not just for me but for my family as well..
ReplyDeleteYour answer would be of great help to me ma'am..
Thank you and God bless you and your family..

Hi Xielamarie, I'm currently in Perth and I've just started my CPA. I took Strategic Management as my first unit and I want to know which unit you can recommend for me to do next. I'm also undecided which electives to take.
ReplyDeleteHi Kvillanueva - I took CA so I'm not so familiar with CPA. Choose an elective in a career you want to pursue. If you want to specialise in tax then take tax or audit if you want to become or you already are an auditor.

hi ms. xiela! im planning to lodge a visa application under skilled sponsored subclass 489. Im a CPA in philippines and been working for 5 years as an acctg. assoc. in a private company. DeleteHi! I came to NSW as a dependent in my mom's spouse visa. I got my philippine license just this year, May. Now, I am having challenges in getting a job. Do you have any advice for me? I am resorting to any job at all...but I am still hoping to get an accounting related job right away to acquire an Aussie license already.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Martina, 25
Hi Martina - a Philippine CPA license is not really recognised in Australia. If you have experience then you can highlight that to the recruiter or potential employer. You can also take up accounting related courses in Australia if you want.
DeleteHello, are.Filipino.Accountants still in demand in Australia, I read in Australian newspaper that the Accountants are flagged to be removed from the skilled migration list. What should I do?
ReplyDeleteHi John - The list changes regularly so you just have to update yourself via the immigration website. Another option is New Zealand.
DeleteHi, just wanting to confirm if the accounting (CPA) certificate is obtained from PRC? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes, Maria.
DeleteHi. Are they publishing list of passers for chartered accountant exams from Australia? I am looking for the results of the September 2016 exam which result is released today.

ReplyDeleteHi good day. I am a cpa here in the philippines but with no work experience, my sister and brother are both in australia. if i apply to student visa will i be taking up undergrad degree or post grad degree?
ReplyDeleteHi Ma'am, this very useful blog. thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteBtw, you mentioned about documents need to be "certified", does this mean notarized? Or does this ask for "Red Ribbon" from DFA?
I'm currently in Dubai, wanting to migrate to Australia. Are the documents you mentioned are same papers that are required for assessment? Thanks

Hi - In the Philippines, it is usually stamped as Certified True Copy (or words to that effect) and signed by a notary public.
DeleteHi Xielamarie,
ReplyDeleteI am not a CPA, BS Accounting Technolgy graduate and wanted to migrate to Australia with my family. What is the best way for to do to go there. And also my mother in law is in AU and told me that it would hard for me to apply there if I"m not a CPA. Is there any other option for me to go there with my family. Thanks in advance. Your blog is really a big help to many.😊
Hi xiela! Your post is really helpful and inspiring. Since you're already experienced i just have a few questions. Do you think i still have to finish my accounting degree here in the philippines if i want to be an accountant in australia? I know that i still have to study there before becoming a CA or CPA. So do i finish it here then study there or just stop here and finish my degree there? Thanks in advance.

Hi Xiela, I'm interested in moving to Australia in the future and have already started processing for my skills assessment from CAANZ. I would like to take inspiration from your story as I'm planning to take up the bridging courses to be CA qualified (Taxation first). May I know of your current progress with your CA certification and if you are now in Australia? I would like to get in touch with you if possible. Appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Sheila, I wasn't a licensed yet but planning to go to Australia. There is an organization who offered a review to get a certificate coming from UK which they told us that it can help us to get job in more than 100 countries as accountant. And they said it is applicable especially for non cpas... Would u mind to give an opinion about the course they offer here in the Philippines. They have partnered with one of the review centers here. And any advise what is the tp take, they offered financial accounting and management acounting etc, they said it will take 48 hours review as it is just a basic with different approach... Any advice please. Thanks.
