Becoming a Chartered Accountant in Australia

Moving to Australia was not as easy as I thought. Don’t get me wrong it is a nice place but in the corporate world, especially in the Accountancy realm, firms and companies could be obsessed with “local experience” and “Australian qualification”.

When I moved to Guernsey (Channel Islands) more than 6 years ago as an external auditor, not having local experience and their recognised qualification was not an issue at all. The important thing was that you have relevant accounting or auditing experience and was qualified back home.

You can still get an accounting or auditing job in Australia without those two but I guess there are more challenges and disappointments, so just be ready. The best way to get through them is to stay in a job to get that experience and study.

CA or CPA?

Based on my observations, accounting/auditing firms tend to favour CA (Chartered Accountants Program of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia [ICAA]) for graduates starting an accounting qualification, although they don’t really mind if you join them already with a CPA qualification (Certified Practising Accountants qualification of the CPAA).

With other entities or companies, it doesn’t really matter which one you take or have already taken.

The CPA Program is cheaper and apparently less stressful. The only advantage that I see on the CA Program, and the reason that I chose it, is that it is recognised more internationally.

Steps for enrolling in the CA Program

The procedures I’m going to share with you is based on my experience, having finished my Bachelors Degree in Accounting and obtained my accounting qualification from my home country, the Philippines.

The Assessment

Before you can even think of enrolling in a module (there are 5 modules in total for the whole program) you have to get assessed first. The assessment is to determine if your accounting degree is equivalent to an Australian degree.

If you have applied for a permanent resident visa in Australia previously and have used ICAA for you accounting assessment for migration purposes, you cannot use the migration assessment for entry into the Chartered Accountants Program as separate criteria apply.

Download the Standard Assessment Form from the ICAA website (www.charteredaccountants.com.au) and fill it out. These are the documents I submitted together with the accomplished assessment form:
  • Original certified copy of the diploma and certificate of graduation from my university;
  • Original certified copy of the academic transcript of records;
  • Original certified copy of the course description with an explanation of what each subject is all about;
  • Original letter of good standing (dated 3 month from application received date) from local accounting body;
  • Original certified copy of my accounting (CPA) certificate;
  • Original certified copy of my exam results;
  • CV or resume; and
  • Certified copy of work reference or letter from employer.
They got back to me after almost 4 weeks and told me that I need to take the following subjects from an approved Australian tertiary institution:
  • Australian Corporation Law
  • Australian Taxation Law
  • Finance

The Registration

It took me a year to finish the 3 subjects. At the end of the day all I needed is the official transcript of records from the university.

Go to the ICAA website and download the Employment Details Form. Ask one of your supervisors (that is already a Chartered Accountant) to be your mentor. Fill out Sections 1 and 2 of the form and ask your mentor to sign in Section 2.

Registration is done online in the ICAA website. You would need to upload the accomplished Employment Details Form, a copy of the assessment letter they sent you (this letter lists the subjects that they want you to take) and a certified true copy of the official transcript of records.

Enrolment

You will receive an email from ICAA after a few weeks that you have been registered. Obtain their timetable and schedules from their website, if you haven’t already, and look up the dates of enrolment for the subject that you want to take. You can now enrol on that subject starting on the date of enrolment specified.

The Journey Ahead

We’re back to being students again, which is not altogether a bad thing.

I’m still in the process of enrolment and will be taking up Audit & Assurance as my first module. I will be sharing some of my notes here so watch out for them if you are in the same journey. Enter you email address in the upper right side of this page, if you want to get the notes emailed to you as they come.

Classes start really soon so good luck to us!

Now be the best that you can be,
Xiela Marie Dacyon

  1. hi sheila, i will be on the same journey as you are and i have a few questions with you regarding the requirements for the assessment.

    1. Original letter of good standing (dated 3 month from application received date) from local accounting body; - local accounting body, meaning the Philippine CPA?

    2. Certified copy of work reference or letter from employer. - does this relate to your Philippine employment or local employment in Australia?

    3. By "original certified" do you mean, you submitted a notarized photocopy of your original documents, or was it your "original documents"

    Grateful if you can respond! thank you!

    1. Hi Heart - my answers to your questions:
      1. Mine was from PICPA
      2. Before coming to Australia, I worked in Guernsey... so it was a letter from my employer in Guernsey.
      3. Original copy of the certified (notarised) document, so not the original documents.

      Best of luck :)

    3. Hi Tomas - the CA qualification is offered by CAANZ (formerly ICAA) in many countries other than Australia. Please check their website at http://www.charteredaccountants.com.au.

  2. Hi Xielamarie, thanks for taking time to make this blog..I am just so happy to find it. I'm still in the planning stage to apply for Australia - I'm also a CPA and a former external auditor (same as my wife), we are in our 35-37 years of age and has a 4 year old kid. Both of us are now in Commerce and industry as managers. Would like to ask if which part of Australia would you suggest is best for Accountants..thank you very much!

    1. Hello Altisoy - most of my accountant friends are either in Sydney or in Melbourne, and I'm in Perth. There are more job and business opportunities in the bigger cities of Australia, I suppose. But that's the nice thing about being an accountant - you can go anywhere you want!

      If you have more questions along the way you can message me in Facebook (at Accounting Can Take You Places). To get the latest articles on my blog, please submit your email address in the right hand box above.

      Do you think it is possible to have or be acceptable in CA program when you are non-CPA here in Philippines?

      Thank you.

    1. Hi Ren,

      1) Even if you are not a CPA in the Philippines you can apply to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in Australia. You have to pass their 5 exams and complete 3 years relevant experience though before you can become a full member.

      2) I took the 3 subjects in a university here in Australia via online studies.

      3) ICAA does not offer the CA exams in the Philippines. I believe you can study in the Philippines but you have to go the the nearest country where they hold the exams (e.g. Malaysia) to take the exams.

      You can check out ICAA's website (www.charteredaccountants.com.au) for more information.

      Thanks and all the best,

  6. Hi shiela. its really a good blog of yours. should i take CA program or CPAA even though my position to applied with is accounting assistant?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hi James - thanks for dropping by my blog. To answer your question - it really depends on what you want, want your plans are for the future and probably how much time you have to study. Based on my observation, those who work for accounting firms (and single, if I may add) tend to take the CA program while those in private companies usually opt for the CPA program of the CPAA.

  9. Hello. I'm currently in my last semester in the BSA program in one of the universities in the Philippines. I've been contemplating whether to take the board exam. I already have a permanent resident visa in Australia and I plan to work there after I complete the board exam. However, I realized that I needed further studies and take the exam there to practice accounting in Australia. Hence, made me realize that taking the board exam here in the Philippines is not needed. Should I still take the board exam or not? Thank you in advance for your response!

  10. hi shiela, congratulations on your blog. It is great! you are helping people which is a good cause!

    May I ask – im a CPA in the Philippines.
    I would like to know CPA Australia’s assessment on my qualification as I plan to work there in Australia (Melbourne).
    If they say that I need to study some courses first, I will do so.

    My question is about the fee. Below is a link from their website.
    I’m confused if I will fall under “new membership/assessment fee”, with fee amounting to $145?
    Or will I fall under “skilled migration assessment” (fee is $445)?

    https://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/member-services/fees/all-other-locations

    would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

    1. Hi jj - if you're applying for an Australian permanent resident visa and need CPA Australia to assess your accounting course then you'll fall under 'skilled migration assessment'. However, if you want to become a CPA in Australia and enrol in their program (to be qualified) then you need to click 'new membership/assessment fee'. Having your accounting course/degree assessed by CPA Australia for visa/migration purposes does not automatically enrol you in their program. They're 2 separate things.

      Hope that helps,
      Xiela

  11. Hi Xiela,

    This blog is great. I am also an external auditor here in PH exploring opportunities to migrate to AU.

    I was wondering from which institution you obtained your skills assessment for visa purposes. I understand that your ICAA assessment was for CA certification and was curious how you applied for an Australian visa (assuming you applied for skilled migration).

    Hope to hear from you and thanks!

I applied for an Australian visa (skilled independent) through the Australian immigration website back in 2005. The requirements and the steps are in their website so just followed everything there.

As to your opinion, do I have to lodge my papers as early as now for it to be assessed by an accounting body in Australia? What organization? And what do you think is the probability that I'll get a positive result? Thanks.

    1. Hi Marj - if you have a plan to work in Australia, in my opinion, work first on your visa rather than the CA/CPA qualification. You have a better chance of getting a job in Australia if you have a proper visa rather than a qualification.
